The material balance problems are classified into two categories as follows: (1) The material balance problems of processes involving no chemical reactions. (2) The material balance problems of processes involving chemical reactions.

The primary objectives of a material balance analysis are to: Estimate the original hydrocarbons in place; Determine the amount (if any) of water influx; Predict future reservoir pressures and production (when coupled with inflow equations).

Material balancing involves taking a survey of the available inputs and raw materials in an economy and then using a balance sheet to balance the inputs with output targets specified by industry to achieve a balance between supply and demand.
