{"id":1544,"date":"2024-07-20T22:51:45","date_gmt":"2024-07-20T22:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/workhouse.sweetdishy.com\/?p=1544"},"modified":"2024-07-20T22:51:46","modified_gmt":"2024-07-20T22:51:46","slug":"respiratory-tract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/workhouse.sweetdishy.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/20\/respiratory-tract\/","title":{"rendered":"Respiratory Tract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The respiratory tract in humans is made up of the following parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>External nostrils<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 For the intake of air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nasal chamber<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 which is lined with hair and mucus to filter the air from dust and dirt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pharynx<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 It is a passage behind the nasal chamber and serves as the common passageway for both air and food.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Larynx<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Known as the soundbox as it houses the vocal chords, which are&nbsp;paramount in the generation of sound.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Epiglottis<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 It is a flap-like structure that covers the glottis and prevents the entry of food into the windpipe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trachea<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 It is a long tube passing through the mid-thoracic cavity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bronchi<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 The trachea divides into left and right bronchi.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bronchioles<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Each bronchus is further divided into finer channels known as bronchioles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alveoli<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 The bronchioles terminate in balloon-like structures known as the alveoli.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lungs<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Humans have a pair of lungs, which are sac-like structures and covered by a double-layered membrane known as pleura.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Air is inhaled with the help of nostrils, and in the nasal cavity, the air is cleansed by the fine hair follicles present within them. The cavity also has a group of blood vessels that warm the air. This air then passes to the pharynx, then to the larynx and into the trachea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trachea and the bronchi are coated with ciliated epithelial cells and goblet cells (secretory cells) which discharge mucus to moisten the air as it passes through the respiratory tract. It also traps the fine bits of dust or pathogen that escaped the hair in the nasal openings.
