Originally, Hooke\u2019s law specified that stress was proportional to strain but later Thomas Young introduced constant of proportionality which is known as Young\u2019s modulus of elastic. Further, this name was superseded by modulus of elasticity.\u00a0Figure 12.3\u00a0demonstrates the Hooke\u2019s Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/learning.oreilly.com\/api\/v2\/epubs\/urn:orm:book:9789332524415\/files\/images\/page300e.png\" alt=\"Figure 12.3\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-016\"><strong>Figure 12.3<\/strong>&nbsp;Hook\u2019s Law<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/learning.oreilly.com\/api\/v2\/epubs\/urn:orm:book:9789332524415\/files\/images\/page300d.png\" alt=\"image\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-013\">where&nbsp;<em>E<\/em>&nbsp;is modulus of elasticity,&nbsp;<em>\u03c3<\/em>&nbsp;is stress, and \u2208 is strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-014\"><em><strong>Working Stress, Allowable Stress, and Factor of Safety:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-015\">Working stress is defined as the actual stress of a material under a given loading. The maximum safe stress that a material can carry is termed as the allowable stress. The allowable stress should be limited to values not exceeding&nbsp;<a><\/a>the proportional limit. However, since proportional limit is difficult to determine accurately, the allowable stress is taken as either the yield point or ultimate strength divided by a factor of safety. The ratio of this strength (ultimate or yield strength) to allowable strength is called the factor of safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-017\">The relationship between gauge length and cross-sectional area of the tensile test specimen can be given as&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"equation\" src=\"https:\/\/learning.oreilly.com\/api\/v2\/epubs\/urn:orm:book:9789332524415\/files\/images\/page301.png\" width=\"102\" height=\"22\">, where&nbsp;<em>A<\/em>&nbsp;is area of cross-section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-019\"><strong>Example 12.1:<\/strong>&nbsp;A mild steel specimen with an original diameter of 10 mm and gauge length of 50 mm was found to have an ultimate load of 60 kN and breaking load of 40 kN. The gauge length at rupture was 55 mm and diameter at rupture cross-section was 8 mm. Determine (i) the ultimate stress, (ii) breaking stress, (iii) true breaking stress, (iv) percentage elongation, and (v) percentage reduction in area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-020\">Solution:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-021\">Given:&nbsp;<em>l<\/em><sub>g<\/sub>&nbsp;= 50 mm,&nbsp;<em>d<\/em><sub>o<\/sub>&nbsp;= 10 mm,&nbsp;<em>l<\/em><sub>f<\/sub>&nbsp;= 55 mm,&nbsp;<em>P<\/em><sub>ult<\/sub>&nbsp;= 60 kN,&nbsp;<em>P<\/em><sub>break<\/sub>&nbsp;= 40 kN, and&nbsp;<em>d<\/em><sub>f<\/sub>&nbsp;= 8 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/learning.oreilly.com\/api\/v2\/epubs\/urn:orm:book:9789332524415\/files\/images\/page301a.png\" alt=\"image\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h4-002\">Stress and Strain in Simple Stepped Bar<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"para-022\">Let us consider a stepped bar of diameters\u00a0<em>d<\/em><sub>1<\/sub>,\u00a0<em>d<\/em><sub>2<\/sub>, and\u00a0<em>d<\/em><sub>3<\/sub>\u00a0as shown in\u00a0Figure 12.4 (a). Different forces of magnitude of\u00a0<em>P<\/em><sub>1<\/sub>,\u00a0<em>P<\/em><sub>2<\/sub>,\u00a0<em>P<\/em><sub>3<\/sub>, and\u00a0<em>P<\/em><sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0are acting at different sections of the bar.
