These forms are briefly described in the following section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ch07lev2sec1\">7.1.1 Forms of Energy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Three primary forms of energy are encountered in a chemical process [1]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Kinetic energy<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>KE<\/em>)\u2014Energy associated with motion. Kinetic energy of a body of mass&nbsp;<em>m<\/em>&nbsp;and velocity&nbsp;<em>v<\/em>&nbsp;is \u00bd<em>mv<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>. Clearly, a body moving at a higher velocity has higher kinetic energy than one of equal mass but lower velocity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Potential energy<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>PE<\/em>)\u2014The energy associated with position. Potential energy of a body of mass&nbsp;<em>m<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>mgh<\/em>, where&nbsp;<em>g<\/em>&nbsp;is acceleration due to gravity and&nbsp;<em>h<\/em>, its distance from the earth\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Internal energy<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>U<\/em>)\u2014Stored energy associated with atomic and molecular structure and characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other forms of energy, such as electric and magnetic field energies, are typically not of interest in chemical processes [2] and are not included in the analysis presented in this book. The energy of a system,\u00a0<em>E<\/em>, comprises these three primary forms.
