The 20th century saw tremendous strides in the development of the understanding of the nature of\u00a0genes and how they function. Mendel\u2019s publications lay unmentioned in the research literature until 1900, when the same conclusions were reached by several other investigators. Then there followed hundreds of papers showing\u00a0Mendelian inheritance\u00a0in a wide array of plants and animals, including humans. It seemed that Mendel\u2019s ideas were of general validity.
