Molecular genetics did not begin in earnest until 1941 when American geneticist\u00a0George Beadle\u00a0and American biochemist\u00a0Edward Tatum\u00a0showed that the genes they were studying in the fungus\u00a0<em>Neurospora crassa<\/em>\u00a0acted by coding for catalytic proteins called\u00a0enzymes. Subsequent studies in other organisms extended this idea to show that genes generally code for\u00a0proteins. Soon afterward, American bacteriologist\u00a0Oswald Avery, Canadian American geneticist Colin M.
