It functions through\u00a0hormones\u00a0\u2013 chemical messengers synthesized by endocrine glands namely \u2013 hypothalamus, pineal, pituitary, parathyroid, thyroid, gonads, and adrenals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hormones<\/strong>\u00a0:They are the chemical substances produced by the endocrine glands that control the metabolic functions of other cells.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Steroid based hormones \u2013 cholesterol derivatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amino acid-based hormones:&nbsp;single modified amino acids, amino acid derivatives, proteins, peptides, glycoproteins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eicosanoids  derivatives of arachidonic acid, 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mechanisms of Hormone Action<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Synthesised hormones affect on target cells by:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing in membrane permeability as a result of the closing and opening of the channels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deactivation or activation of regulatory molecules  covalent modification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Synthesis of regulatory molecules involves changes in gene expression.
