For each of these quantities, there is a standard unit used universally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Length (or Distance)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition<\/strong>: The measure of how far apart two points are in space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SI Unit<\/strong>: Meter (m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Common Prefixes<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kilometer (km) = 103\u2009m10^3 \\, \\text{m}103m<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Centimeter (cm) = 10\u22122\u2009m10^{-2} \\, \\text{m}10\u22122m<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Millimeter (mm) = 10\u22123\u2009m10^{-3} \\, \\text{m}10\u22123m<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Mass<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition<\/strong>: A measure of the amount of matter in an object. It is often confused with weight, but mass does not change with location (unlike weight, which depends on gravity).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SI Unit<\/strong>: Kilogram (kg)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Units<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gram (g) = 10\u22123\u2009kg10^{-3} \\, \\text{kg}10\u22123kg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Milligram (mg) = 10\u22126\u2009kg10^{-6} \\, \\text{kg}10\u22126kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Time<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition<\/strong>: The measure of the duration of an event or the interval between two events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SI Unit<\/strong>: Second (s)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Common Prefixes<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Minute (min) = 60 seconds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hour (h) = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Temperature<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition<\/strong>: A measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance, which determines how hot or cold the substance is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SI Unit<\/strong>: Kelvin (K)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Units<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Celsius (\u00b0C): Commonly used in everyday life (related to Kelvin by T(K)=T(\u00b0C)+273.15T(K) = T(\u00b0C) + 273.15T(K)=T(\u00b0C)+273.15).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fahrenheit (\u00b0F): Mainly used in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong>Electric Current<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition<\/strong>: The flow of electric charge (usually electrons).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SI Unit<\/strong>: Ampere (A), often shortened to <strong>Amp<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Units<\/strong>: Coulomb per second (C\/s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. <strong>Amount of Substance (or Quantity of Matter)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition<\/strong>: The measure of the number of entities (atoms, molecules, ions) in a substance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SI Unit<\/strong>: Mole (mol)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Note<\/strong>: One mole of any substance contains Avogadro&#8217;s number (6.022\u00d710236.022 \\times 10^{23}6.022\u00d71023) of entities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <strong>Luminous Intensity<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition<\/strong>: The measure of the perceived power of light.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SI Unit<\/strong>: Candela (cd)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In physics, there are several fundamental quantities that we measure.
