It is made up of the\u00a0cytosol, intracellular structures,\u00a0mitochondria, and other\u00a0organelles. While cytoplasm may be used as a synonym for protoplasm, there is a subtle difference. The\u00a0protoplasm\u00a0is the living content of the\u00a0cell\u00a0made up of the cytoplasm and the\u00a0<em>nucleoplasm<\/em>\u00a0(the fluid inside the\u00a0nucleus). The cytoplasm, in turn, excludes the nucleoplasm and, therefore, it is that protoplasmic content between the cell membrane and the nuclear envelope.\u00a0<strong>Etymology:<\/strong><em>\u00a0from<\/em>\u00a0Greek \u201c<em>kyto\u201d<\/em>-, \u201c<em>k\u00fdtos\u201d, meaning<\/em>\u00a0\u201ccontainer\u201d, \u201creceptacle\u201d, \u201cbody\u201d and Greek \u201cpl\u00e1sma\u201d.\u00a0<strong>Related forms:\u00a0<\/strong>cytoplasmic (adjective).\u00a0<strong>See:\u00a0<\/strong>cell.
